Iphone: user-proof, developer-proof, warez-friendly.
Jim
I think I should list some of the cool stuff that smartphones allow you to do…
Users:
- use any SIM-card
- watch videos on websites
- listen to music in a variety of formats (OGG, FLAC, APE)
- download from Youtube
- download files from Safari
- use maps offline, and be sure the cache won’t get deleted at the most important moment
- turn off EDGE/GPRS to save your money on constant updates/push notifications!!
- browse the filesystem (let’s say you want to send your friend an epic savegame of Palm Heroes?)
- send files over BT
- customize the look of your device
Apple not only believes that you don’t NEED to have all that on your phone, Apple also does its best not to let you have it!
If you’re not from that Apple sheep pack, you should definitely join the Jailbreak community, and have all that on the iphone.
Developers:
- Port your apps to iphone. And use the fast method of GFX output. BANNED by Apple!
- I assume it would be nice to test your apps
Ad-hoc testing doesn’t work for us and for many, many other devs!
- Get your apps to the customer how you want and when you want.
- Get PAID! And get paid ON TIME, the way you want (currency/method of transfer)
- Develop apps if you’re not a US- or “first-class” EU- resident
- A clear description of APIs
- Tech support!
Palm heroes is a port from WinMobile. Non-openGL app. C++, not very native on iphone. Would you like to get ten times better framerate and response? Sure you do. And so do we. Everyone, except Apple. They call it “private APIs”. They say you are not allowed to use it, and ban apps that do. There could be sooo many ported games on the iphone. Could…
It is practiacally almost impossible for a non-US resident, or a “first class” EU resident (let’s say Romania, or Bulgaria) to get past apple’s massive bullet-proof bureaucratic engine to have his/her app in the app store. Apple did their best for the iphones to be US-devices. Many people outside US can’t even buy apps, because their debit/credit cards are not accepted in the app store!
And the customer is always wrong with Apple! Every time you contact the tech support about a bug in xcode/SDK, they tell you to “check the code and recompile the app”, and you’re back where you were – at the end of the tech-support queue…
Warez:
Iphone is the most crack- and hack- friendly device ever! It has zero defence against piracy. Installing an app for free is as easy as copypaste-feeding the device 3 commands through the terminal!

Hi there,
I looked over your blog and it looks really good. Do you ever do link exchanges on your blog roll? If you do, I’d like to exchange links with you.
Let me know if you’re interested.
Thanks..
